F-1 Student Visa Guide

F-1 Visa Guide for Cornell University

This page gives Cornell admits the exact F-1 visa steps, document list and SEVIS timeline they need before their 2026 intake.

Cornell University is a private, SEVP-certified Ivy League institution in Ithaca, New York, hosting international students from more than 120 countries, with Designated School Officials issuing the Form I-20.

You are applying to a private research university with a large global population. Cornell is SEVP-certified, so its Designated School Officials can issue the Form I-20 you need for an F-1 visa. After the admissions office admits you and you submit financial documents, the DSO prepares your certificate of eligibility.

Once you hold the I-20, you pay the current SEVIS I-901 fee at fmjfee.com, complete the DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application through the U.S. Department of State, and attend an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Canadian citizens do not need a visa stamp but must present their I-20 and passport at the port of entry to receive F-1 status.

Your I-20 and the international student office

Cornell International Services, located at 300 Caldwell Hall, handles immigration advising for F-1 and J-1 students. You can open a ticket through their online system for questions, schedule a 10-minute appointment, or visit during office hours. The office publishes a monthly newsletter with immigration updates and runs orientation programs for new international students.

Financial documentation for your I-20

Your admissions office will ask for proof of financial support before issuing an I-20. You must show funds covering the school's published cost of attendance for your degree program. If you plan to bring dependents, tell your admissions office early so they can issue I-20s for your spouse or children.

Arriving in Ithaca

Ithaca sits at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region. Winters are cold and snowy, so you should prepare warm clothing and boots. The city has a compact downtown with grocery stores, restaurants, and TCAT bus routes that connect campus to the commons and surrounding areas. Gorges and state parks are nearby, but the hilly terrain and lake-effect weather take adjustment if you are used to flat or warm climates.

Common challenges for Cornell University applicants

Working during and after your program

You may work on campus up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session, according to USCIS rules. For off-campus work, you must obtain authorization through Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training. CPT is approved by International Services and your academic department. OPT requires an application to USCIS after International Services recommends you in SEVIS.

Frequently asked questions

When will I receive my Form I-20?

Your admissions office sends the I-20 after you are admitted and submit financial documents. International Services then creates the SEVIS record. Processing time varies, so submit your documents as soon as your admissions office requests them.

Can I work off campus during my first semester?

No. Off-campus employment requires authorization through CPT or OPT. CPT generally requires one academic year of full-time enrollment first. OPT is for after graduation or after you have completed one academic year. Both programs have specific eligibility rules set by USCIS and SEVP.

What if I need to drop below full time?

Contact International Services before you drop any classes. A Designated School Official can approve a reduced course load only for specific reasons: initial academic difficulties in your first semester, a documented medical condition, or if it is your final semester. Dropping below 12 credits without approval violates your F-1 status.

Do my dependents need separate I-20s?

Yes. You must inform your admissions office that your spouse or children will accompany you. They will receive dependent I-20s, which they use to apply for F-2 visas. F-2 dependents cannot work in the United States, and F-2 children may only attend school through grade 12.

How do I maintain my visa status after graduation?

You have a 60-day grace period after your program end date to depart the United States, transfer to another SEVP-certified school, or apply for post-completion OPT. If you apply for OPT, you must file with USCIS before your program end date and before your grace period expires.

Can I travel outside the U.S. during my studies?

Yes, but you need a valid travel signature on your I-20 from International Services. The signature is valid for one year while you are enrolled, or six months if you are on OPT. Carry your passport, visa, I-20, and financial evidence when you reenter.
